Azure Speech TTS

Azure Speech TTS is one of the components that give a voice agent its voice: it turns the agent’s answers into audio for the caller to hear. It uses Microsoft’s Azure Speech neural voices, available in many languages and accents, Catalan among them.

It plugs into the TTS connector of the Voice Agent node. It holds the voice settings the agent uses on every call.

When to use it

  • Your company already works with Microsoft Azure and you want to use your own speech resource.
  • You need a voice in a specific language or accent, such as Catalan or Mexican Spanish.
  • You want a specific speaking style, such as more cheerful or more empathetic, if the voice supports it.

Configuration

You need an Azure Speech credential with your Azure speech resource key and its region. See Credentials.

FieldWhat it does
Credential (required)The Azure Speech credential used to connect to the service.
VoiceName of an Azure neural voice, which includes its language: for example es-ES-ElviraNeural (default), es-ES-AlvaroNeural, es-MX-DaliaNeural, en-US-JennyNeural or ca-ES-JoanaNeural. The full list is in the Azure Speech Studio voice gallery.
SpeedSpeaking pace. 1.0 is the voice’s natural pace; higher is faster and lower is slower. Accepts 0.5 to 2.0. Default: 1.0.

Advanced options

FieldWhat it does
Speaking StyleA style the voice supports, for example cheerful, empathetic or customerservice. Empty for a neutral tone.

Output

The TTS output holds the voice settings. It connects to the TTS connector of the Voice Agent node, or to Fallback TTS when you turn on Fallback Engines and want it as a backup. The editor will not let you plug it into an STT connector by mistake.

Example

A cooperative serves its members in Catalan.

  1. Add Azure Speech TTS and connect it to the TTS connector of the Voice Agent.
  2. In Credential, choose the Azure Speech credential.
  3. Type ca-ES-JoanaNeural in Voice.
  4. Test the agent in the playground and listen to how it sounds.

Good practices

  • Choose a voice in the same language the STT expects, so the agent does not speak with a foreign accent.
  • Azure bills the usage to your own Azure account. Check your usage there.
